As you know discovering and negotiating with exotic cultures is a tricky and
tenuous endeavor, and our sources must remain secret lest we lose our mystical
access.

The Bowler Hat— not the cowboy or sombrero — was the most popular hat in the
American West, prompting Lucius Beebe to call it "the hat that won the West."
Both cowboys and railroad workers preferred it because it wouldn't blow off
easily in strong wind, or when sticking one's head out the window of a speeding
locomotive. Worn by both lawmen and outlaws, including Bat Masterson, Butch
Cassidy and Billy the Kid the Bowler was devised in 1849 by the London hat
makers Thomas and William Bowler. It was created to fulfill an order placed by
the Hatters firm Lock & Co. of St James's . Lock & Co. had been commissioned to
design a close-fitting, low-crowned hat to protect gamekeepers' heads from
low-hanging branches while on horseback. Previously keepers had worn top hats,
which were easily knocked off and damaged. The Bowler Brothers were
commissioned to solve the problem. While most accounts state the original
customer to be William Coke, a nephew of the 1st Earl of Leicester, recent
research has cast doubt, and it is now believed to be Edward Coke, the younger
brother of the 2nd Earl of Leicester to place the order.

Our fine example of Haberdashery has Brown Grosgrain edging and trim accented
by a splash of color of exotic feathers. The inside diameter of this lovely is
24 inches.
Simply a "Must Have" for the up coming season's frivolities.
