Some of the finest hats were made in the 1930’s and 1940’s and this hat is no
exception. Bowler hats at one time were shaped by hands and not machines like
ones you find in the 50’s and on. You can almost scoop up a pile of sugar with
the leading edge or trailing edge, probably where the term I’ve often hear
these called ‘Sugar Scoops’. This hat is from Knox of New York, one of the
leading hat makers of this time. This happens to be one of their ‘Extra
Quality’ models called ‘The Fifth Avenue.’ Hats marked extra quality from this
period usually represents a higher mixture of beaver fur along with the
wool/felt blend. I took great pride in this hat and received many admirable
comments about it over the years, especially when I played live music. I don’t
perform live anymore, other than for my wife who has Alzheimer’s now and our
older dog who still thinks he’s a puppy. Hoping to find this a new home, it’s
proceeds will help fund another passion of mine which is working with wood
using only hand tools. This is my first listing after a long break, stay tuned
for many other nice things to be listed as my wife and I were antique pickers
